Pre Pregnancy and Post Pregnancy Care

Before, during and after pregnancy is always an optimal time to benefit from chiropractic treatments. Whether you are looking for pain relief during pregnancy or recovery support after pregnancy, chiropractic care is a safe, pre-pregnancy-and-post-pregnancy-careeffective, natural and non-invasive practice rooted in the understanding that the brain coordinates your entire body’s organ and cell function via your nervous system.

Chiropractic is completely safe through your pregnancy. As your belly starts to grow, techniques will be modified for maximum comfort and effectiveness. When supporting pregnancy related conditions, only very gentle and precise adjustments are performed. Period.

During pregnancy weight gain can cause extra stress on the spine. This naturally causes a shift in posture. As a result, even without noticing, you may start altering your posture and gait… this can result in pain and discomfort by placing extra stress on surrounding ligaments, fascia, tendons and muscles. Gentle adjusting re-aligns the spine allowing for a more balanced body that is free of muscle spasm and joint irritation.

During pregnancy the hormone relaxin is found in ten times its normal concentration. Relaxin is secreted to relax smooth muscle, joints and ligaments and reaches peak levels at 14 weeks and again at delivery. One of its major functions is to help increase the space for baby to pass through the birth canal. When the spine and pelvis have more laxity pain is sensed because the body is operating out of its normal range of movement. Effects can last up to 5 months post-delivery. Chiropractic adjustments help to distribute forces evenly throughout the spine, eliminating the likelihood for painful irregular movement patterns.

Chiropractors do not turn breach babies. When indicated, chiropractors adjust and align the pelvis and spine to correct for misalignments. It’s these misalignments, or subluxations, that can cause irregular compensation and pulling of muscles and ligaments attached to the pelvis. Facilitating pelvic alignment and muscle balance will allow the baby to shift into the most favorable position for birth.

Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include…

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Reducing symptoms of nausea
  • Decreasing the time of labor and delivery
  • Alleviating back pain, neck pain or joint pain
